Description: Students review and build upon their knowledge of grammar, writing, and literature.

Description: This course provides the student with an overview of world literature through short stories, poetry, nonfiction, drama, and novels and continues the writing process through essays, research, book reports, and journals.

Journalism:
Course I – The Techniques of Journalism

Description: The students will develop an understanding of the technical process involved in creating a newspaper through study and production of the school newspaper.

Two distinct courses are rotated so those students interested in a communications career or furthering their writing skills have opportunity to develop in editor, layout, and production leadership roles.

Description: The first portion of this course is spent developing a deeper appreciation and understanding of poetry in form, function, and sound. The students are also led through the process of writing their own poetry. The course then progresses on to reading and understanding the dramatic process and concludes with a brief performance experience.

Description: This course is designed to develop the student’s ability to read, analyze, and write about serious literature. An emphasis is given to the influence of the time period on the novel’s content.

Advanced Placement Literature and Composition:

Grade Level: 12
Course Credit: One
Prerequisite(s): B+ in prior English classes and instructor approval

Description: Advanced Placement Literature and Composition is comparable to an introductory college course. This course is designed to develop the student’s ability to read, analyze, and write about serious literature. An emphasis is given to the influence of the time period and on the novel’s content. A spring examination administered through the College Board will make credits available from most colleges based on the examination score.

Research and Composition—Senior Writing Capstone Course:

Grade Level: 12 (required for graduation)
Course Credit: 0.2
Prerequisite(s): None

Description: This course will be taught as an independent study course. Seniors will choose a topic of study and develop an in-depth, research based paper highlighting the writing skills they have acquired so far. Students will be assigned a faculty advisor and be given a quarter in which they can will develop the paper.
