Mission Trips

"Mission to the Children" Mexican Trip On July 23, 2008,  twelve students from West Lutheran and St. Croix Lutheran traveled to the Sonora region of Mexico to teach the story of Jesus stilling the sea to the children in places like Altar, Tubutama and Desemboque. The students did a fantastic job using their Spanish skills and interacting with the children in singing, crafts and game playing while Missionary Ron Baerbock held bible classes with their parents. As an observer, I thought both the energy and the compassion of our volunteers were superb. They were definitely "lights" as they enthusiastically shared their Savior‘s love and concern with these young listeners. "Mission to the Children" is run by a group of lay people who do a great deal of volunteering in northwestern Mexico offering the people the good news of Jesus as well as food vouchers to help them feed their families. The trip wasn‘t just work. The students also had the opportunity for some fun on the beach in the village of Desemboque. There they had the opportunity to enjoy the sun and the water for a day. On their trip back to Tuscan, Arizona, they also had the opportunity to do some shopping at Punto Peñasco on the Pacific coast where they could practice both their Spanish and their ability to barter. Culturally, they learned a lot about how business is done south of the border. Students/Alumni from West who attended were Matt and Rachel Behmer, Sara Krueger and McKenna Passolt. Their trip was supported in part by WELS Kingdom Workers. Another trip is planned for next summer. Students, please seriously consider being part of this endeavor of bringing the gospel to people who don't know it. Shepherd of the Hills Exploratory Steve Strong, Nate Wordell, Nick Trebesch, and Phil Strong (all West Alumni) did a little four-wheeling on their day off while helping at Shepherd of the Hills Exploratory-Las Vegas, where the Strongs’ older brother is pastor.
