National Honor Society

The National Honor Society at West is a select group of students chosen for their dedication to academics, character, leadership, and service. Through participation in NHS, we have the opportunity to practice leadership and show Christian love by organizing service projects that benefit our school and our community. NHS is an excellent group for West students who want to use their gifts and challenge themselves.

Membership is an honor and a great experience for students up to a challenge. In order to become a member, you must be a current sophomore or a junior for at least one semester. In addition, you must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Other requirements include previous service background both in and outside of school and good character. If you meet these requirements, we encourage you to become a member and use your talents for God's  glory!

Below are some of the NHS recent service projects.
Honoring Veterans and West Alumni Who Service Our Country

The West Lutheran National Honor Society sent over 85 cards to veterans within the West Association. They also collected and packaged 13 boxes for alumni who are currently serving away from home either within the United States or abroad. Thank you to all who donated, but most of all we thank those men and women who are faithfully serving our country.

Bears for Kids Drive

The West Lutheran National Honor Society recently completed their Bears for Kids drive with 62 bears were donated by West students, families, faculty and staff.  These bears will be dontated either to Maple Grove Hospital or North Memorial Hospital.

Jeans Drive

Ninety-nine jeans were donated during the NHS Teens for Jeans drive! These jeans will be donated to a local charity or shelter right in our community.
Planting Bulbs on the School Grounds

The West Lutheran National Honor Society braved the cold temperatures and a few snow flurries planting for the Growing in Grace service project. With a pick ax and shovels, the NHS members planted 2000 daffodil and tulip bulbs around the school. In the spring, be sure to check out the beautiful blooms by the school signs, in the flower bed west of the school, in front of the school and around the baseball field.

Tutoring Tuesdays

Tutoring Tuesdays is a pilot program at King of Grace started by West sophomore student Katie Delano.  She was looking for a way to give back to her grade school.

A group of National Honor Society students and former King of Grace alumni spend an hour after school each Tuesday tutoring students who need extra help, listening to them read, or assisting with homework as needed.  So far seven West students have participated with several more beginning second quarter.  The commitment is based quarter by quarter to allow West students to still be involved in seasonal extra-curriculars.

The hope is that more programs will be developed at other area grade schools allowing their alumni to give back and promote a connection between the high school and grade schools.

Tutor Brian Merchant says, "Tutoring is one of the best things ever!"
